It's hard to tell since self-development is my dedication since quite some years now...
But I recall making the choice to be happy now, before waiting anything to happen, and to make that choice again and again until it become almost (not always, granted) automatic.

Doing stuff that are proven to make you happier (diet, exercise, etc) when you don't feel like it is the shortcut to actually feel happier.
The destination is the journey. You'll enjoy it with time, it did for me.
