Open Source coding is probably as close to a meritocracy as you can get - especially since you can always release your own open-source project. And yet there are very few women who are open source developers. Is it because of misogyny? Or is it because they'd rather be doing something else with their time?

Normally i don't comment on things like this but if you're watching anything from the bbc then you're doing it wrong.

I admit I never watched the whole thing so I could be misunderstanding the point. But (true) software engineering takes years of training and dedication. The fact that women expect to be able to walk in straight out of an 8 hour instagram/facebook/twitter marathon and contribute their opinions to get a "well deserved slice" of the multibillion dollar industry is insulting to those who actually work in the field.

The fact of the matter is that the development world has become piss easy. I would say it's fast headed in the same realm as infrastructure support. You just don't need a degree anymore as most company's requirements don't actually require a decent level of competence. The vendor's software does all the heavy lifting for you. With today's .Net framework dev-friendliness, more people than ever are getting into the development game. Men and women.

The problem is, when it comes up to a real challenge, almost all of them fall flat on their faces. It really isn't a big challenge for anyone to sit down and with a few prompts of what to look at, I would give it three months tops for anyone to flesh out a perfectly functional website with database backend with little to no prior experience. It really isn't that difficult any more. To me though, that doesn't make you a developer.

So when all this guff about "girls can code" comes up, it's presented like they were just as smart as guys all along - who knew - big whoop! The fact is anyone can "code" these days, it really doesn't take a big dollop of brain power. In a world driven by VB.Net and an Internet full of copy pasta, it's really not the challenge it used to be.

I would bet you this though; throw a piece of C++, Assembler or even Java on linux problem at them with the sole knowledge that there's a bug, most of these people - men and women - fail at the first hurdle. Some of the new guys coming in can't even tell me what a stack is, have no idea what I mean by popping a stack, most couldn't even describe the general architecture of a CPU. I had to explain bit shifting a while back to a few of my junior team. Some of them damn near cried. The three women just checked out mentally after ten minutes, and of the two guys, I think only one of them grasped what was happening.

Is it important these days to know any of this? Well from a development perspective probably not for a good 60% of roles out there. By that I mean for a good 60% of dev roles I bet it will soon be the case that a degree isn't even required.

But it's that top 40% of roles that remain out of reach to anyone but the most dedicated and educated of developers. And that realm is so far, in my experience, as yet untouched by women. Simply because they don't have the experience or capacity for it. And I would also paint a lot of men with that same brush. And it is these top 40% of roles that tend to pay the most.

So these revelations of "woman can code" really mean nothing to me. The fact is, so can my own Mother!

Now to delve a little deeper, most of the women I look after do not hold development roles. The ones that do are junior and really haven't the capacity to move into any senior roles, nor are they putting forth the effort to do so. Most of the women are largely in administrative tasks, such as scrum masters or business operations types. Added to that, in the event that I select a female candidate for any position, it is the usual that they are offered the top-end of the salary range. Males are usually offered the lowest or even sometimes below. Hey, we have to look good to the guys who pull our purse strings!

What really gets me is that these are the sorts of opportunities that I would have given my right leg for when I was coming up. I didn't get to my position today because of social promotion, I got it because I worked fucking hard and long hours. If at 22 someone told me I could go get a chance to work in a fully funded gaming start-up, I can't think of many of my piers who would say no. Yet they get these utter clutzes and give the opportunity to them because for some reason they're "disadvantaged"? Fuck that! That's wrong!

This is depressing and hilarious to me. There aren't a lot of female programmers, but the ones I know would be incensed about this. The way to bring women into programming isn't to mock the skilled, dedicated women who already do it with shit like this.

The women who work in computer science, and any STEM field for that matter, aren't actually interested in this kind of girl power feminist bullshit. They are generally aware that they are in a male space and for the most part they like it that way since there is less bitchiness, gossip, and typical behaviour you find in a female office environment. A lot of women in STEM tend to have quite masculine or tomboy behavioural traits anyway and find it easier to fit in as a result.

The people behind these stupid movements have no real interest in coding or science. They just see a male space and they have to destroy it. They're usually in liberal academia or the media and filled with so much left-wing self-righteousness that they want to remodel industries in their image.

p.s I haven't paid my licence fee in more than 15 years since I was a naive student. To other Brits on here, I recommend you do the same and free up £150/year to spend on important things (like a gym membership). The BBC is already under attack from the Tories making them pay for free licence fees for OAPs, so every non-payer just adds to the pressure on them.

Have you ever noticed how leftists could go on for hours about how biased FOX news are, but will NEVER concede that any other news agency is biased toward the other end of the spectrum? I'm surprised you didn't mention that "Lulu" app they had shown. They said 1 in 4 U.S college girls now have this app that rates a "guys decorum" 1 out of 10 "shoes size, his manners, if he's a momma's boy" and post the results all over social media to their friends family etc. Jesus! the hilarious thing about this documentary is that they did the classic SJW move - even though these girls had no interest in coding whatsoever, they shoehorned the girls into coding and then declared "look girls can code too!"

Of course girls can code too... nothing's stopping them and there's plenty of skilled female developers. The real "problem" that needs "solving" is that the majority of developers are male - this isn't due to sexism, but is because most girls just aren't into programming or STEM subjects in general. Men and women have different interests generally - and that's absolutely fine imho - but nope, that doesn't fit the agenda!

I couldn't watch anymore when the girl was crying about 30 seconds in saying she's never been privileged enough to show her potential.

When I'm driving I like to listen to BBC radio (it is accessible throughout Europe, not just the UK) for their news reports. But one thing I've noticed is how often they talk about 'women's rights', 'sexism', 'misogyny' and other, similar problems. Usually their correspondent goes to some developing country and interviews a local 'rights activist' who then tells their point of view.

Yesterday, they were in Argentina, and as it turns out, Argentina is very sexist. They interviewed a male psychologist who's had female clients too. And he said that even though he sees 'sexism' as a problem in contemporary Argentina, yet many of his female clients complain that 'they can't find a proper male' who will provide for them. Also, a portion of his male clients feel pressured by the society to fulfill this provider role for women.

As an Eastern European, I find it somewhat confusing that 'feminism' is so much talked about in Western mainstream media. I've traveled to plenty of Western European countries and nowhere I saw these 'sexism etc.' problems in real life. On the other hand, I saw plenty of males who looked like they have gender identity problems.

This reminds me of a certain club in a nearby college where I live. The club is a "Women in Business" club. The funny thing is that they are more concerned with business fashion. Their Facebook and Instagram pages often showcase different girls with outfits that reflect business attire. They even have a fashion show, displaying different business outfits. They want to be seen as these sophisticated "business women" but the actual business part of it all is less important.

I saw a minute or two of this... it's the most retarded show I've seen in a long time. It demonstrated nothing of value to me.

However I did get to watch some classic-level hamstering from these chicks trying to protect their own self image. (Which was indeed the reason I went "this is retarded" and turned it off.)

Also, as a side note, I don't think the link is likely to work for our cousins across the pond. I don't think the BBC iPlayer is available there unless they use a UK-based proxy.
