What distinguishes a bad habit from a harmless one?
AskTRP constantly wants to know if it should swear off masturbation, video games, television, weed, whatever. We hear endless arguments about whether this or that is "bad" or "okay".
This is the reasoning of a child. The dose determines the poison. Everything has a "too much", even oxygen and water. The question is how much. When is a habit simply a habit, and when is it cancer?
cancer (kănˈsər)►
n. Any of various malignant neoplasms characterized by the proliferation of anaplastic cells that tend to invade surrounding tissue and metastasize to new body sites.
n. The pathological condition characterized by such growths.
What this means in layman's terms is that a cell is cancerous if, when its growth is blocked by another cell, it eats into that cell instead of stopping.
This is how you know when anything you are doing is becoming a problem. Does it fill the time, attention, and resources you alot to it, or does it eat into other areas of your life?
Is masturbation reducing your motivation to go out and meet girls? Is weed keeping you idle on the couch? Do the video games stop when you're tired, or do they keep you awake into the predawn hours? Are you reading TRP and then going out and trying what you learned, or has the reading eaten the practice?
This is stupidly simple. Don't ask if it's bad, because enough is never bad, and too much always is. Ask if what it is doing is bad. Is it eating something else it's not supposed to eat? Cancer.

This is great advice. Everything in moderation and even oxygen is poison in high doses.

First of all, hilarious and well done.
But....I disagree about memorized canned lines and concepts being totally useless.
You rely on “pickup” lines to eventually discard reliance on pickup lines
Basically, fake it til you make it. This is how most men (including yours truly) groom themselves into successful pussy smashers.
The mere act of knowing what winners do and say aligns oneself with that attitude to create intrigue and come across as high value

The learning of any subject naturally proceeds from the specific to the general.
First you learn very specific stuff, by rote. Then you learn the principles behind it. Then you generate your own specific material.
[deleted] 6y ago
Even now I like to go back and occasionally reread but its not for memory.
Its to stoke the fire. Its brings forth the attitude where I can generate my own winning material
Does that make sense?

Way I used to frame it, canned routines were like lifting weights. doing the same routine with perfect form, so that when you need to use it, you're strong enough to.
Also, you really need to learn how to knit. Making chain mail is so much easier than building some heavy suit, plus the monty python jokes hurt ones rep

Always ask yourself whether a girl/activity/(insert anything you want) is taking too much time and drain your energies. This is the first step to clear things out. Obv when you are inside a relationship or another 'cancer' is difficult to see things as they are, but you have to force yourself. Personally, I'm a huge failure assessing my own behaviour, so I know how it is complicated. I think we will win our battle eventually, best of luck everybody

Sounds like a good rule of thumb ????

It is, the issue lies applying it, we are too blind in general. Imo answering this question would save a lot of time and probably lives

so newbies, if you find yourself toying with the idea of half measures, go full monk.

for the goyim amongst ye that translated means; you can't know what's enough until you get to know what's too much.
so there ye have it, go full monk mode ye weaklings, and discover who you truly really are by pushing your boundaries.

I was reading this thinking "yep, got all my habits under control, nothing interfering with growth where it shouldnt. I'll just read this post for what it is and continue on with my day" right up until
I'm far too logical, always researching methods and processes. Thinking I need to read more and more. And sure this has worked wonders with gym and diet (for muscle growth); but building character, progressing with my career, getting better with women, these things all need less thinking and more doing. More learning from your own personal mistakes and how to improve next time, than hearing countless other people's FRs

Definitely wish I didn't play video games all night years ago... so many weeks wasted.
Yesterday I went on a hiking trail for a few hours. Felt great.
Haven't jacked it in a few days. It's nice being able to just look at a still image that isn't overtly pornographic and still be able to get off vs having to watch some gross shit to achieve the same effect.

I have a very high sex drive. I masturbate a lot, but it's no replace of real sex for me. I get horny and want to fuck real girls a lot. My problem is, I live in a third world country where prostitutes are great and cheap, so I developed a quite unhealthy habit of fucking them. I lose a lot of time by fucking where I should be out making money.

The cancerous cell that escapes the control is the cell that wants to survive...
inside a dying organism...

It comes down to habits - and things like masterbation, smoking, porn, etc are addictive and get harder and harder to stop once those pathways are deep in the brain. When those habits become engrained into your subconscious - you've lost control.

Anyone who thinks porn is harmful is either a beta bitch or someone who needs to get a sense of perspective urgently.
Porn is just a reminder every women has a price and like and a dog for a bone they will do anything if the price is right.
It affirms the notion of M.O.B
SparklyRedLightsaber 6y ago
Taking poison is bad (it's either harmful or a waste of time), no matter the dose.
It's the reasoning of a grown child to say that everything is relative and nothing is universally bad.
newName543456 6y ago
Water is poison too, if you drink too much of it...
EntrepreneurToBee 6y ago
Weed, masturbation, video games or whatever is poison now?
Shit, man. Weed has never caused a single death in human history and even has certain health benefits.
Video games keep the brain active which is good.
It is recommended to masturbate a few times a week.
Obviously if you do any of these too much it will have a negative effect. Keep it in moderation and it will help you. All of these are not poisons. It's a good post.
Self-honest 6y ago
Video game addicts chug energy drinks to stay up all night, then go to the hospital with chest pain, and die from heart attacks.
http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/health-when-masturbation-can-be-fatal-the-practice-of-auto-erotic-asphyxia-is-often-concealed-by-a-1484619.html
Jerking it can become a cancer worse than not approaching enough women.
Weed has caused tons of deaths indirectly because people go too far down that road and become apathetic. They eat too much, drink too much, neglect the important things in life, and ultimately develop diseases that ruin their quality of life and can kill them.
That's just off the top of my head. The fact that all of those things are "harmless" actually makes them more dangerous than heroin in my opinion.
SparklyRedLightsaber 6y ago
Weed, masturbation, videogames are childish wastes of time. You know what really keeps your brain active? Convincing women to have sex with you and then fucking them hard
EntrepreneurToBee 6y ago
One doesn't exclude the other...
I don't smoke weed, but if someone likes to burn one from time to time i don't see whats wrong there. it's important to relax from time to time. Just keep it in moderation.
That being said, yes, you should bang women and lift. They don't have to exclude each other, when it does then it's cancerous.
max_peenor 6y ago
You do understand that the vast majority of poisons from antiquity are now components to modern pharmaceuticals, right?
SparklyRedLightsaber 6y ago
I understand that completely.
You take the word "poison" so literally though.
Losing a child is also a "poison". You can't change the dosage downwards from that. If your kid dies, that's gonna impact you negatively for the rest of your life.
Damn, you guys are dense.
max_peenor 6y ago
Losing a child is a bullet to the head. Bad analogy.
SparklyRedLightsaber 6y ago
A bullet to the head would be a perfect analogy too. You can't lower the dose on that. But you can increase it.
max_peenor 6y ago
Well, self-inflicted might be a tough one to manage.
PreOrgasmGroanLness 6y ago
You're factually incorrect. Dose makes the poison, which is what you don't understand. It is a rule of the universe proven numerous times in science in various fields.
You need to have time off, you can't be working 24/7. It is a fact that time off improves productivity. One cannot have no recreation or he'll go insane.
greatslyfer 6y ago
So basically a threshold value that determines whether something becomes bad in RP context?
Everyone's threshold value is different due to their circumstances, as in they only have x amount of hours to focus on their y activity, and if their "bad" activity is done for a time high enough that it starts taking away from x amount of hours, it becomes bad as in it went past the threshold value.
SparklyRedLightsaber 6y ago
There are some things that are always bad, in any dose. This unoriginal beta homeopathic bullshit is factually incorrect.
PreOrgasmGroanLness 6y ago
Prove it
Take an example of strychnine, rat poison. In low dosages it is not poisonous and can be even used medically. Cocaine is used in medicine as anesthesis.
Too many or too few wolves in an environment can be devastating to the environment because of coexisting deer populations becoming too small or too big. Therefore wolves aren't inherently bad, but too many or too few of them can be cancer. Same with deer.
If your statement was true:
Then in no wolves, too many deers case we'd eradicate deers instead of introducing wolves.
In case of anaesthesia, we wouldn't have a good anaesthetic.
In case of painkillers, we wouldn't have any, since by your reasoning morphine is poison.
When it comes to time off, hard working people would be less productive because they wouldn't ever relax, since relaxing activities are poison, no matter the dose.
Care to give any examples, or are you going to continue to disagree with original post without any arguments? Let's have a discussion
SparklyRedLightsaber 6y ago
It seemed sufficiently obviously wrong as to not warrant any example.
My usage of the word "poison" was somewhat misleading. I meant to say poison as in something that is unconditionally bad for you which seems to be the more common usage of the word. I do not consider morphine poison. Maybe it's because of my lacking English skills since I'm not a native speaker.
Let's take "death" for example. If you're dead, there's no going back. You can't really be a "little" death.
I'm not sufficiently well versed enough in pharmacy to be able to name a drug were a single molecule is strictly bad for you. But you can imagine the concept, right?
Similarly, there are some things were taking/doing them in any dosage has more harms than benefits, do you not agree?
BTW, I didn't want to be too adversarial in my tone. I like this community and I consider you guys "robust" which is why I employ a more provocative tone around here. I'm all for arguing and meaningful discussion
[deleted] 6y ago
Squatting 400 lbs your first time is toxic.
So you start with a lower dose.
Read up on the Wim Hof method. Stress (whether it be physical, mental, emotional) is healthy so long as the dosage is controlled and you don't surpass your body's crisis point. Once the crisis point has been passed, the stress becomes lethal. Normally this entails scenarios of prolonged stress.
It's the very stress that could kill you that makes you stronger. There are three states your body can be in: fragile, rigid, or antifragile.
The body nor the mind will adapt if no incentive to adapt is present.
The_Noble_Lie 6y ago
What single molecule causes death?
I think OPs point is none. Our bodies deposit that nanometer (?) sized molecule in fat, or piss, breathe, cough, excrete it out. Our bodies are squishy machines in that sense.
So you are definitely wrong. The dose makes the poison Just think about it brother. Everything is like morphine in that sense. Our bodies respond in a particular way that may be useful in the moment, yet with too much of a dose death will be incurred. Simple as that!
Its why smoking a cigarette every so often (look up sporadically) doesnt really matter. Our bodies respiratory and filtering system clears it out like nothing. Its the long term (or I suppose short term as well) regular habit that should be avoided
SparklyRedLightsaber 6y ago
Ops point wasn't "no single molecule causes death", it was "no single molecule is strictly bad for you".
Smoking cigarettes sporadically isn't as bad as smoking them all the time. But it's still bad.
The_Noble_Lie 6y ago
Biology aint that simple.
Hormesis, brother, hormesis. Please, please, please research it for your enlightenment. It blows my mind :-)
SparklyRedLightsaber 6y ago
That didn't enlighten me at all. It's basically the idea we're talking about here.
Where's the hormesis in getting a bullet to the head?
The_Noble_Lie 6y ago
Uh. No. Stop the straw man. What the fuck kind of question is that?
Wheres the hormesis in smoking a cigarette once a week is a better question that id be more than happy to discuss. Or kids playing in dirt ... or another bizarre example, sucking on quarters (as displayed by a fraction of young children)
These all introduce toxins into the system. Yet if in small enough doses, the body improves in preparation and efficiency for future toxins that are inevitably experienced even when being extremely mindful (breathing when youre in an urban city for example) Our body can deal with toxins but in many cases, familiarity with toxins in low doses breeds a healthy homeostasis. Great example being venom.
