One escort mission is fine, but the entire story shifts to revolve around her out of nowhere, and you can’t so much as unlock a door without her help. She decides where you go. She does all the talking for you. It’s nuts. Completely ruined the tone of the games, where up until that point, you were basically a one man army AND a theoretical physicist. I remember when it was fresh that the players were totally schmoozed by the detailed facial expressions (impressive at the time) and her being “hot”. What really bothers me is when people start harrassing devs when an original story game is showed and the main character is a white male only. I mean, there were riots about Geralt of Rivia (from The Witcher 3 which is also a spin off from a series of fantasy books) was a white male who only dates women, it was a well written character since the books, and it was criticized for being white and not dating other men too. It's a continuation of taking movies that have been done already, and supplanting the male character with women i.e. "Ghostbusters" (2016) and "Ocean's 8." Instead of writing new material with female leads, they rehash already done and successful stuff without male leads.

On the surface it seems great to the superficial PC crowd who only care about equality of outcome, but the relaity is that it is the exact opposite of what feminism, #metoo, #timesup, etc. are supposed to be about.

If they cared about any of it they would, as I stated, write new, original material with female roles. Instead they do the bare minimum, force female roles into already done and existing male roles for no other reason than to sell movies, twice, and virtue signal at the same time; everyone jack and jills each other off and the women being "empowered" are actually being exploited.

In the case of video games, especially with the WWII example, they took an established role (male, US soldier in 1941 - 1945) and instead putting in a woman. Women were involved in WWII, but not as soldiers; no women in the Island-hopping campaign, no women during the Normandy landings, no women being air dropped in France. Women were relegated to non-combat, no field roles. Otherwise, they were part of the French resistance. Sure, they could say, this is an alternate timeline/universe where women fought in WWII... except it's bullshit because it's only one woman, and it's in a game using the backdrop of a war that's been done a thousand times over... so instead of writing new, interesting material, they just plopped a woman into already existing and overly-copied material.

I guarantee you that game was made with a man in mind and some "diversity" contractor told the project manager and everyone above the project manager that recent trends indicate a female lead would do well here and every coder, tester, and manager facepalmed.

It's kinda insulting since I don't generally care about their gender, its about how they are written in the game. Companies are going, "Here's a woman. Now buy the game" and most feminists are just praising it and not catching on that, maybe? its just a selling point. Before I spend my hard earned money on anything, I ask; Is the game good? Story, Characters, Mechanics, Gameplay, are they all good? Is it NOT a broken terrible game? But most feminists will just ignore it and bite the "its has a woman" hook even if its a terrible game!

I remember The Boss (MGS3), Jill Vallentine( RE1&3), Claire Redfield (RE2,CV), Faith (Mirrors edge), Ada Wong (RE2,4,6,Damnation), Ellie (Last of Us), Lara Croft and my most recent, Clemintine from the Walking Dead. There are many more. I don't remember these characters because of their gender or "woman can do anything". They were memorable and amazing characters. Their story, goals, struggles and how you believed they were actual people is what makes them interesting.

Feminists will go, "But there is MORE MALE CHARACTERS THAN WOMAN". True. But that doesn't make them better or more interesting than their counterparts. I could argue that woman characters are BETTER WRITTEN than the males. Marcus Fenix from Gears of War? Throughout the game he's just this angry sour character from start to finished. Start of the game, "Im angry", Game/War ended, "Im still angry". No character development!

I think customers need to extra careful because they are STILL companies that have to make money. They could lie and say, "Here is X because we support that group" but could actually mean, "Here is X because its a selling point and we want money."

What makes The Last of Us 2 sillier is that Ellie is somehow supposed to go fist to fist with men twice her size.

I love video games especially a story-driven RPG. So I have no problem with lesbian scene. The Last of Us was incredible and this one looks even better. Ellie looks more kick-ass than any other female protagonist on the market right now so look past it.

Also recently I played Uncharted Lost Legacy starring Chloe and Nadine. Uncharted hate Nadine because she overpowered 2 full grown men in a fight scene but this didn't stop me enjoying Lost Legacy because 1. I'm not that emotionally invested in Nathan 2. Chloe is a babe, she's sexy, witty and with the right level of sass. Nadine was also a great companion, she grew up a tomboy following in her fathers footsteps, I get it. Cool.

Feminism and diversity will keep getting pushed (which is okay within reason) and we should keep a weary eye but the quality of games are still getting better. God of War, The Last of Us, Spiderman, Red Dead Redemption, Death Stranding, Cyberpunk 2077 there's enough room for girl protagonists and macho men protagonists. But as a black guy, I do find it ironic that they are tackling this diversity angle by including more white females when black protagonists have been even more super rare in the history of video games.

Yeah, videogames sort of suck now for a lot of reasons. I don't have a problem with female characters its just a lot of them are very poorly written or do things that are outright unbelievable.

If you're familiar with Anita Sarkeesians "Tropes against women in video games" or whatever, you might remember the "Man with boobs trope" Where Anita summarizes that female characters are often written with masculine character traits and she believes that to be a problem and I actually agree with her but for different reasons. I think its just outright cringy to have Charlize Theron beating up two secret agents with a high-heel shoe or have an overpowered redhead babe fighting in WWII.

Female characters can be done right in video games, writers are just lazy.

One good female character is Ellie from the Last Of Us. The combat and the way she plays really gives you the impression that you're a little girl and can't go around bricking everyone in the face like Joel can. It doesn't take away from the experience at all since guns are such a great equalizer and Ellie has a rouge-ish personality that changes drastically as the story goes on. (Ellies personality change through her experiences in the story is in my opinion one of the best character developments in video game history.)

Anyway I've sort of shyed away from video games too because quality in gameplay and writing has taken a nosedive in the last few years with a few exceptions. Witcher 3 was amazing. Some well written (and modeled ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) female characters in that too.

Well, I work in the video game industry, and having gone to plenty of gatherings of industry professionals I’ll say that while SJWs aren’t the majority, they are by far the most vociferous and influential; and often are the people rising to power quickly in the field.

The recent influx of identity politics and pushing of postmodernist values in games isn’t surprising in the least.

Also, most of the new kids on the block are coming from university environments, which have recently been breeding grounds for extreme leftist thinking and witch hunt mentality.

So this is indeed the reality of future gaming at least for the next few years most likely.

That being said, I think video games should serve as the place to express these sort of things.
It’s all about fantasy, and in my opinion, these issues should be left to iron themselves out normally in the real world instead of by force; but in a game; anything goes.

The trouble I have is the fear that they will try to silence other types of fantasies, as extreme socialist groups tend to do.

If it does become that way; where the “fear of bad influence” will dictate extreme censorship among game devs, then all is lost.

Imo its not rlly feminism its more of the fact that females are a large possible group of consumers they can target by making the whole industry seem more female friendly. Money talks, and women are like half the population.

Video games, Films, Series, Books. It's difficult to find a good story somewhere without a fucking girl in masculine role toping men...

Video games were essentially my life for a good 25 years and even I think it's retarded to think that one should look to them for identity and validation. Honestly this sounds like something a poor bastard who grew up without a decent male influence in their life would complain about.

All you're seeing is capitalism in action. Entertainment products in general are courting females because they are a relatively new demographic with an increasing amount of disposable income and time. It's nothing personal, and it isn't like they are saying they don't want the business of males, they just want to improve their bottom line and sell more products to more people.

Personally I welcome more female avatars and characters in games, because when I choose to waste time staring at a screen, I enjoy seeing some overexaggerated tits and ass. Frankly I don't know what there is to complain about. If you don't like these avatars or the fact that games are including them, then don't play. Instead of bitching that developers are no longer catering to your specific interests, try being a man and create something on your own. Might I suggest tabletop games, where you can make your own setting from scratch?

Go for indie games. The big devs have been overtaken by gambling-crazed suits anyway.

It’s not a bad thing but if they’re using a female character to showcase male characteristics then it’s pointless. Last of Us was really good at that. Having a female character (film or games) kicking ass doesn’t give that sense of realism.

Who dafuq cares? Free market, let them try to sell whatever, you don't like it don't buy it, the market will correct itself, last time I checked profitability and efficiency are more important than feelings and agendas when sales > profit > stock price is involved. If marketing profitability analysis tells the video game companies that this shit will sell they will sell it, it just means that there are more female players. I personally don't play female characters since I don't relate for shit with the story, i'll just stare at their ass the whole time if it's 3rd person.

I stopped buying EA games 10 years ago, and havent lost a wink of sleep over it.
