I can virtually guarantee she's *been* demanding that effort and more her entire adult life. She's a reasonably attractive woman even at 36. At 20 she was probably a stunner. A woman like that doesn't end up single and "never having had a boyfriend" by accident.

With regards to female psychology, that's a feature, not a bug. Disingenuous compliments and sneaky social sabotage are how women compete with each other.
